Lost and Found
Christopher Martin Gallery, Dallas, 2023
Christopher Martin Gallery is pleased to announce “Lost and Found,” a solo exhibition of new work by Ian Kimmerly.
The works in Lost and Found are assemblages of fleeting moments, fading glimpses of the small yet meaningful interactions that shape our sense of the past, present, and future. Both everyday and transcendent, these moments hint at an undercurrent of truth, grace, and interconnectedness. Kimmerly sees flashes of this beauty watching pedestrians steadily flow through an intersection or during an unexpectedly intimate interaction between strangers.
In these paintings, photorealistic images of people in conversation are interwoven amongst crowds, blowing leaves, and other natural elements. Painted images are blurred, scraped, and obscured, while larger strokes of paint remain thick and gestural, creating movement and narrative within each work. Figures both embrace and move apart. Stories form and break down.
The temporal nature of our shared experience is at the core of these paintings, along with the hope that these interactions will guide our actions, creating a more empathetic culture.
